Day ???

i mean, i can understand their trepidation in working with this white boy given his whiteness is apparently contagious.
what these characters looked like in the first panel of THIS VERY SAME PAGE, for reference:

Thank God For Linda Park.

i hope that textured thing he has his hand on is the shell of a turtle he's keeping in his lap. i hope when flash confronts him he is in a villain chair that swivels around to reveal he is petting a turtle like a cat. please.

this issue and manhunter (1988) #8 are my introduction to mark shaw, and i am pretty compelled.

huh.

i continue to be delighted at how much his pop culture state obfuscated his starting point for me. before getting to know him, how could i have ever possibly guessed that his placement on the mcdonald's character meme would be in the "orders a single black coffee and leaves" corner?

ohh, i love it. he is such a fuckhead.

boooo.

my yet another go at researching continuity is going.

justice league: the flashpoint paradox (2013)
superman iii (1983) is so interesting that it almost makes up for barely having loisand lex, but a lex that is only implicitly bald can never truly win my heart, so i am willing to sacrifice him. in it, and i WOULD watch it even if the entire runtime of the movie were just an extended version of the superman vs. clark fight, even though that would come at the steep cost of losing every single scene that richard pryor is in.

i have not watched this showteen titans go! (2013), for the mysterious hypothetically purely hypothetical person who has any amount of familiarity with DC yet has somehow evaded all awareness of this particular outgrowth, possibly through some sort of rip van winkle situation. since there was a Lot less of it, and i don't know if i ever will again because the amount i did watch (still a Lot, even if a Lot less) did, i vaguely recall, lead me to the conclusion that it's not my thing. that being said, i am a bit enamored with how the flashes are drawn in it.

i paused the movie to write the previous post and then got sidetracked forever and then resumed the movie only to be waterboarded with the conspicuously NON-instrumental soundtrack to this carnival scene.
i expended my GIF efforts on dickkory skyping so you just have to take my word for it, but i am fascinated by jaime and garfield throwing their hands in the air and whooping excitedly as if they're on a rollercoaster when they are instead actually on a ferris wheel. which is moving in a ferris wheel manner at a ferris wheel speed.

it's neat that they animated her side of the call too. that's a fun little bit of UI verisimilitude i don't usually see.

especially with taking into account the framing of what the laptop camera (and therefore the other character) can see.

i am jotting down some character notes and running into the laughable difficulty of the fact that every superhero character has certain qualities and shares certain qualities with each other because they are all. superheroes. who are protagonists of superhero comics. the struggle to not write sentences that basically amount to "what really defines this character is that they are heroic :) despite their flaws, they ultimately try to do the right thing :) to make the world a better place :) they do this in a way that people ordinarily don't :) as if they go beyond ordinary people :) as if they are :) super :)"

maybe one day i will encounter a story that makes me care for superwonder even a little bit.

i am looking forward to the waid run since i hear it's so classic and defining but i am kind of already enthralled by what i'm seeing so far.

OK.

superman: doomsday (2007) has more of an eradicator than reign of the supermen (2019), which actually has the eradicator in it (neutral observation). though neither of them are as compelling to me as the eradicator in the comics ("technically not neutral but still not meant as a condemnation" observation).

why come there are two different animated movies based on the death of superman?
oh okay, that's why.

belatedly realizing that killer croc fully has the potential to be one of my pookies.

who the fuck is this man.

she's gonna getcha.

my readthrough only lets me get fleeting glimpses of characters (every time i drop in on hal his life is in fucking shambles and he is either breaking up or getting back together with carol ferris), but even so. this progression really is something.

it sounds bad, considering i just remembered the etymology of fridging.

why are characters on comic book covers always asking me shit like this?

i mean, out of all possibilities, i definitely did not expect the answer to "who is cyborg superman?" to be "reed richards expy."

i'm kind of losing it at this. etrigan does not show up at all even a little bit before or after this panel. other characters are shown arriving, this general group shot minus etrigan is established earlier, and then he's just here. for this one piece of dialogue. and then he's gone by the next page when everyone is putting on their Armbands Of Mourning.

smears on text is fun.

i can't believe i almost missed this.

in the midst of this sumptuous i spy of Every DC Character To Ever Exist Except The Ones Who Got Vaporized: gar and vic being gay. as they should.

taking a chronological approach to superhero comics truly does rule, because i'll read the silver age and be like, "wow, this is so much more nuanced and realistic than what came before it," and i'm saying this about an era of comics where characters say shit like "fortunately, my protective deflecto-field redirected dr. rayblast's blast ray into a slag heap that conveniently needed destroying anyway!" and then i'll read the bronze age and be like, "wow, this is so much more nuanced and realistic than what came before it," and i'm saying this about an era of comics where oliver queen points at a plastic sculpture of a grimacing jesus erected by a racist cult or some shit and says "this is society" while the statue of liberty weeps in the background. and it's a correct observation both times.

pretty up there in "funniest ways to put this."

for all that i've heard about grant wilson as part of deathstroke's whole deal, not much, admittedly, but i at least knew he existed? i was not expecting him to die in his second ever appearance.

"my son"

alas, the march of time.

slap that on a valentine's card.

i fear i may never not wrestle an impulse to shriek with pure compressed delight every time i see a group shot of the JL interacting with normal-sized things and then the atom with a tiny version of the thing.

Posts prior to this point are still in the process of being mirrored.

quite adore The Atom's Special Emanata employed to highlight him when he might otherwise be too small to notice

now surely his villain origin story is that he got super mega fired for doing this.

i have been thoroughly delighting in my chronological approach, but catching glances of remotely modern stuff makes me realize that i don't think i could back out of reading this way even if i wanted to. jumping straight to Current Superhero Comics after immersing myself in the golden and silver ages so much would be like freezing hot glass.

want this here and just needed this part but this is clipped from this video as far as i can tell

finally got around to reading soulsov

i love the excuses for the rest of the FF not joining johnny's adventures in strange tales, which so far in my readthrough range from "nah, he's a growing boy, let him handle it himself" (actually pretty affirming for his desire to be taken seriously) to "they didn't find out about it until later because johnny freaking snuck out to go one-on-one a dangerous villain who ends up putting him in a death trap" (see aforementioned desire to be taken seriously) to "welp, we have to go do Boring Grownup Stuff, like Serious Adult Money Taxes, totally unrelatable to you, the Torrid Teen-Ager, anyway don't you go sneaking out to one-on-one a dangerous villain who ends up putting you in a death trap" (said death traps, incidentally, are in this period of comics 90% likely to be chock-full of asbestos)

spaghetti time aside, i still haven't figured out what it is i want out of mikuga. i am left flounderingly brimming with some feeling of: they are real good, i want them to [โฆ]? [stand next to each other]? [hug]? [shake hands]? [verbally affirm their friendship]? [ride a ferris wheel together]? [protect each other]? [stand next to each other again]? [stand there, being interesting characters, next to each other]?

mikugaโฆ i like them. but what about them? in what way? that's what i'm trying to pin down. because i think they are Neat and want them to be Close. in a way that Feels shippy despite also having little interest in seeing them in traditional shippy scenarios (smooching, flusterment, sharing a single long spaghetti noodle, which is technically a form of smooching and actually also i do want to see that, i want to see long spaghetti date, so this post is cancelled now i guess).
